International Students use this form to request an extension to their I-20 expiry date.

Federal regulations allow only certain compelling academic or medical reasons for a student to extend the F-1 status. Delays caused by poor performance, academic probation, suspension or CPT (internships) are not allowed by regulation. The SEVIS system allows a maximum one-year extension.

Students should meet with both ISO and academic advisor before completing this form.

All program extensions may require proof of updated financial documents. You will be contacted if new financial documents are needed.

When submitting this form, you must list your advisor's e-mail as the reviewer. Once your advisor has approved your form, allow a minimum of 7 working days for a response to your request. All requests for program extensions must be received a minimum of 30 days prior to your current I-20 expiry date. All program extensions may require proof of updated financial documents. You will be contacted if new financial documents are needed.

Compelling Reason for extension

The Department of Homeland Security requires that all F-1 students maintain valid F-1 status. You are applying for an extension of his/her I-20 to maintain valid status while completing your degree program. Federal regulations allow only certain compelling academic or medical reasons for a student to extend the F-1 status. Delays caused by academic probation and suspension are not allowed by regulation. The SEVIS electronic system allows a maximum one-year (2 semester) extension.

Proof of Funding 
  • Students who request for an extension of one academic year, or at least two semesters, must submit proof of funding for the total amount listed on the Cost of Attendance page. *A prorated funding amount may be considered for students who only need an extension for one semester or will only be enrolled for one credit – please email us at international@unthsc.edu for more information.
Must be in Liquid Funds. This is cash or currency. The cash you physically have on hand. Example Bank Accounts: The money in your checking account or savings account.
